With the recent completion of the Sam’s Branch Greenway tunnel under Covered Bridge Rd., it is possible to ride from Falls Lake to near downtown Clayton on a single ribbon of asphalt. The trail currently ends in a woods just behind the Clayton Municipal Park, which seems to beg for connection to something – to the park at least. Thes end of the trail it is only about 1,000 feet as the crow files from Deep River Brewing!
Technically speaking, The Neuse River Trail ends at the Wake/Johnson county line where it becomes the Clayton Riverwalk Trail. Often the Neuse River trail is described as a 28 mile trail starting at Falls Lake, but that number only represents the Wake County section of the physical trail. The contiguous ribbon of asphalt goes almost into downtown Clayton, and the mileage markings are consistent with the Neuse River Trail markings from Falls Lake. The total mileage from Falls Lake to the Clayton Municipal Park is a smidge over 34 miles.
