Pieces of longer routes are cobbled together here with parts of others to outline an interesting loop turning at Umstead Park. There are lots of possible variants, such as taking Walnut Creek Greenway out to Lake Johnson, or entering Umstead and exploring the many trails for even more variety.
This route follows side streets for more than half the ride. Once in west Raleigh the route uses the Melbourne Rd. bridge and the Trenton Rd. bridge to cross the beltline. For another notch in your belt, the Carter Finley tunnel makes an easy third connector. Trenton Rd. is used on some the Cary routes, and is one of those rare stretches close to town that has a country feel.
