Greenways, the serenity of Umstead Park, and some road riding, this route has variety. Most riders use wide handlebars and knobby tires in Umstead, but a cross bike provides plenty of stability for the packed gravel roads. Dix Park, the Art Museum Park, and Umstead Park are all linked in this whacky looking figure eight ride.
Crossing from Dix Park to Centennial Campus, this route follows the Walnut Creek Trail to Lake Johnson. Neighborhood roads link to the greenway along Edwards Mill Rd. via the Melbourne Rd. bridge. The Edwards Mill Rd. segment can be busy, but features a bike lane while the segment on Ebenezer Church Rd. does not, though traffic is generally light on this stretch. Trails that run through Umstead Park, and parallel to Ebenezer Church Rd. are alternatives to riding on Ebenezer Church. The Edwards Mill/Duraleigh intersection can be skirted on sidewalks or on neighborhood streets if one prefers. Coming back to Dix Park, the Reedy Creek Trail connects to the Rocky Branch Trail for a section also known as the Art to Heart Corridor.
