Ligon Rd. Tunnel

While this tunnel is not on a greenway, it affords a great way to get from the Method neighborhood, or even Lake Johnson, to points west of the beltline via Beryl Rd. Ligon Rd. connects directly with the Rocky Branch trail at Gorman St. and makes for an easy ride through NC State campus, past Dix Park, and into downtown via Cabarrus St. Of the handful of 440 crossings in the west part of Raleigh, the Reedy Creek Pedestrian is the structure with the most stature. The Ligon Rd. tunnel is about a mile south of that bridge and is the Thomas to the Reedy Creek bridge’s Gordon. There is only one lane of traffic through the tunnel, which dates to the early 1960s. As it disects NC State campus it seems to be designed as a ‘local’ link between the NC State main campus and research labs to the west or the highway. It will almost certainly be changed by the current belt line widening project.

The Cary Short Loop and the Five Parks Loop both use this tunnel and the feeder streets.
