Vernacular Art on the greenway is alive and well. While the officially sanctioned art is interesting and obvious, there is a collection of ‘art projects’ scattered across the greenways that are spontaneous – and often get whitewashed after a brief showing.
Tunnels are great places for an artist to work in peace, though sharp eyes are required to pick out the paintings in the dark of a tunnel when attention on navigation is at a premium.
This was up on the walls of the Battle Bridge Road tunnel on the Neuse River Trail for a while before it was painted over.
Recurring themes speak to a larger purpose than free expression – perhaps territory markers?
